Charles lived in Stratford Village for 40 years, and put some thought into his career choices.
Charles recalls how he became an organ builder
I had a certain level of talent in music, and I was very good at woodwork. So, they introduced me to the idea of being an organ builder. So, I went along and had an interview with this organ builder firm in a road off Forest Lane (must not waste time on that).
I subsequently became nine months into organ building. I was in that job for say three months and it occurred to me that there were not a lot of organ builders about, and it occurred to me (surprises me now how I was thinking) that there was not a lot of organ builders about and I wanted to do something common: common work. So, I went to East Ham Technical College and I applied for a course on carpentry and joinery.
