“I remember the only shop in the actual Stratford Village area that was open at that time is the one that is now ‘Sylvia’s Corner’ which was a grocery shop run by an old lady with an Alsatian dog. It was the sort of place you could go to on a Sunday if you had run out of toilet roll, or milk or baked beans or something, but it didn’t have a very wide range of stuff.

The south of Tennyson Road you can see it had been a shop and it had things like workmen’s tools in the windows, and it looked like a shop window, but by then it wasn’t a shop at all.”
