Housing Action Areas (HAAs) were set up through the 1974 Housing Act to tackle inner city decline in small areas of around 500 properties. The Greater London Council (GLC) set up an office in Aldworth Road and supported the creation of a Residents’ Association. Local residents were encouraged to get grants for home improvements, particularly the installation of inside bathrooms. Despite reluctance from some local residents and private landlords, many houses were improved! Local resident Penelope was involved and gave a talk to local residents as part of the project.
